Debrecen
A few kilometres before Debrecen it starts drizzling. We put on the jackets, but unfortunately, the rain soon becomes heavy. We pull up at a bus stop to sit it out. I tell Igor that we only have a short distance to cover and should proceed, otherwise we will be chilled to the marrow. "It is not impossible for the sky to clear up" – Igor tries to be funny. But after an hour and a half, the weather does not seem to be clearing up. Therefore we put on waterproof trousers and start cycling towards Debrecen. We arrive tired, angry and with wet shoes. There is no point in continuing the ride. We decide to spend the night in Nagyerdo Hotel where we can relax in a warm Jacuzzi. After supper, we jump into hot water and immediately go for a water cascade to have our backs and thighs massaged. After half an hour, we can hear our bed summoning us, so we return to the room.

It has been raining all night long, only to clear up early in the morning. The buffet style breakfast is great. We leave at 10 am, pulling up by a cash machine as we have travelled without Hungarian money. We ride through the centre of Debrecen. Both in Romania and Hungary, we enjoy looking at town and city centres – renovated old towns with ample greenery and numerous squares, working fountains, nice benches and modern buildings that fit harmoniously into this landscape. We take a stroll around the city, walking our bikes. Debrecen was damaged substantially during Allied air raids in 1944. After World War II, financing mainly went to education and industry, and no one was concerned about blocks of flats disfiguring the historic city. Nowadays, there are only a few interesting monuments in the city centre.
