We travelled by plane to Odesa, from where we headed off for an eleven-hour overnight train ride to Crimea. Our luggage was more economical than usual. We had to take a tent, sleeping bags, air-beds, a mess tin, etc. We ended up with two bags containing bikes, a trailer, two sacks, a pannier, a rack pack, two handlebar bags, and a rucksack – a combined weight of 73 kg. Luckily, we paid for the whole compartment (4 bunks) in the Odesa - Simferopol train. The luggage took up one entire bed and a part of another. The compartment was like a sauna because the whole carriage heated up unbearably. We wanted to let some fresh air in, but the window did not open. Then to freshen myself up and go to sleep. "Freshen up" – easier said than done! In the toilet there were a few handles for God knows what – thanks to them I successfully performed my acrobatic feats and managed to wash more than just my face:-)
